A swing and a miss?

ÂÂ State Republican Chairman Stephen Minarik, trying to keep the heat on the Hevesi issue, fired off a news release Tuesday afternoon ripping so-called government watchdog groups for their lack of involvement.
“If the Comptroller was a Republican, these self-described ‘good government’ groups would have organized a mob of angry villagers with torches and pitchforks to storm the Comptrollers’ building, demanding his immediate resignation,’’ Minarik said.
ÂÂ Not long after, however, one of the groups fired back. Blair Horner of the New York Public Interest Research Group recycled an old news release from Christopher Callaghan’s campaign that cited NYPIRG, Common Cause and the League of Women Voters for demanding answers from Hevesi. Horner called it “sloppy research.’’
ÂÂ “One would think that one week before the election the State Republican Committee would have something better to do than attack NYPIRG and its government reform colleagues,’’ he said.

C’mon Yancey – get it straight will ya? Even the Times Union gives a little more credit. NYPIRG’s original “Callaghan” statement was merely a call for answers to questions – without stating the questions.
And then, when the answers came, NYPIRG rushed right in and demanded Hevesi’s resignation!!! Oh, wait a minute, that wasn’t NYPIRG. As a matter of fact, NYPIRGS’s only statement since that demand has been to refer the press to Callaghan’s statement which reflects their original statement. In other words this PUBLIC INTEREST Research Group remains out of the public arena on this one. I guess they feel there’s no public interest in a statewide financial figure who takes advantage of the taxpayers for his own purposes.
Ya know, I’m not crazy about Minarik, but he’s got a point there.
