If only Hevesi were running for AG

October
31

Too bad Jeanine Pirro isn’t running against embattled Comptroller Alan Hevesi instead of Andrew Cuomo for attorney general.  She certainly had a lot to say about the Queens Democrat during a campaign stop in Saratoga Springs this morning.

Oh yeah, and Cuomo is not doing the right thing when it comes to Hevesi, she said.

“Look, we’ve got seven days left.  This is one of the most important races in the state and I think events in the last few weeks have indicated how important it is,’’ she said, referring to a state Ethics Commission report alleging Hevesi broke the law by appointing a state worker as his disabled wife’s chauffeur.

“I have called on my opponent to disavow Alan Hevesi and to call for his resignation, as I have. And I’ve also indicated right from the beginning that I would proactively investigate Alan Hevesi under the Tweed Law, seek a referral, and do what prosecutors do. My opponent has indicated he would wait for a referral,’’ she added.

The governor may recommend the Senate begin removal proceedings for Hevesi. The Albany County district attorney is conducting a criminal investigation in the matter and the state Attorney General’s Office is probing whether Hevesi owes the state more than the nearly $83,000 he recently paid to the treasury.

Cuomo is a former head of the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development and a non-practicing lawyer.

Pirro, former Westchester County district attorney, said her campaign’s poll numbers are “certainly more positive’’ than independent polls that have shown her to be consistently 20 points behind Cuomo.
