Former CIA analyst speaks on Iraq war in Cold Spring
Former senior CIA analyst Ray McGovern will speak in Cold Spring tomorrow.
The theme of McGovern’s talk “The Deceit that Draws Us into War.”
McGovern, formerly a senior CIA analyst who prepared the President’s Daily Brief for presentation at the White House in the Nixon, Ford, and Reagan administrations will discuss what he calls the “distortions, half-truths and outright lies used to sell the public and Congress on Iraq war.”
After a 27 year career with the CIA’s analytical division, McGovern received the CIA’s Intelligence Commendation Medallion and a letter of appreciation from then-President George H. W. Bush.
When the current Bush Administration defended the use of torture by the US government, McGovern returned his CIA service award to disassociate himself from the practice.
McGovern is a founding member of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity. The group now includes 55 former professionals from the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Department of State’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research, Army Intelligence, the FBI, the National Security Agency, and other US and allied intelligence agencies.
The talk takes place Nov. 2 at St. Mary’s Church in the Highlands in Cold Spring at 7 p.m. The visit is part of an East coast speaking tour organized by Witness for Peace and sponsored locally by Philipstown for Democracy and the Mid-Hudson Progressive Alliance.
