Schumer is Senate’s #3
Via John Machacek in the Washington bureau:
Sen. Chuck Schumer landed a key Senate leadership post today while agreeing to serve another two years as the Democrats’ campaign chairman.
Schumer formally became the Senate’s No. 3 Democrat after grateful colleagues created the new post of vice chairman of the Democratic conference and elected him to fill it.
In the job, Schumer will oversee strategy and policy  and stand ready to take other assignments from incoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who also acts as conference chairman.
Schumer’s elevation cemented the informal leadership role he had assumed as chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
He plans to speak to the media, via conference call, this afternoon. Look for a full report in tomorrow’s paper.
