It’s coming down

November
16

A now infamous Orange County roadside sign that reads “CONGRATS AL QAEDA & KJ” is about to be replaced by the more mudane “1 by 5 tongue & groove in stock.”

Lumber store owner Seth Arluck, a registered Republican and staunch supporter of Republican Congresswoman Sue Kelly, earned the proverbial 15 minutes of fame when he put up a sign thanking Al Qaeda and a nearby Hasidic community called Kiryas Joel for Democrat John Hall’s election victory.

“I was really pissed about the results,” Arluck said by phone from his store in New Hampton. A Democrat until 1997, Arluck first became a Kelly supporter after learning that her husband is a builder. His backing of the former florist grew with her efforts on behalf of small businesses, he said.

Arluck’s shorthand commentary on Route 17M vents his frustration over an alleged deal between Democrats and Kiryas Joel to provide a controversial water pipeline in exchange for delivering crucial votes to Hall.

Hall said “water” and “pipeline” never came up in his discussions with the community and he made no promises.

Arluck, once a campaign volunteer for Bill Clinton, said the Al Qaeda reference was his way of being “sarcastic” about national security under the Democrats.

Once in office, Hall said, he will work to implement the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, something never carried out by Republicans.

National security reports show the U.S. has become much less safe under the Bush administration due to the ill will that results from our occupation of Iraq, Hall said.

“The Republicans have fallen down on the job of protecting us,” Hall said.

The question is – will the water pipeline be built and who approved it?

We all know that a candidate doesn’t necessarily discuss what they will do fin exchange for votes – their handlers do. That way, as in this case, there is deniability,

I voted for John Hall because he represents my, and obviously the majority’s, views—namely that the current Republican administration and Congress, including Sue Kelly, are beholding only to big corporate interests, and the special interest groups from which she receives her funding—including the NRA gun lobby, and the tobacco, pharmaceutical and big oil industries. I was not promised any pipelines or water for voting for John Hall…only the hope of getting my government and democracy back from the brazen, lying crooks that tricked us into this war and unfortunately still run the COngress until Jan. 1, 2007. Mr.Arluck’s sign is despicable, and he should be ashamed of himself.

it is not very often that there is a major realignment
of political power in this country…it happens may
two or three times in a century…Republicans in the congress had their chance to reflect the views a a majority
of their constituents regarding the war in Iraq. Some did
like Chuck Hagel, and others who spoke out..others like sue
kelly didn’t either because they actually believed that
removing sadam was correct even in the face of rotten
intelligence, or because they did not want to offend
the house leadership in order to be able to get money
for their district..in either case that should not be
the way the game is played…the American public
is fed up with a foreign policy that has run amuck..
that departs from traditional conservative foreign
policy framework, that thumbs its nose at our allies
and tries to impose western values on a tribal society
because a group of former jewish socialists (the neocons)
think that israel will be safer…
The president bought into their faulty logic because
they and the evangelical right were acting out of
religions conviction not out of what was best for the
security of the US…rumsfeld is now history and
cheney is marginalized…The neocons are out and
the Baker/Hamilton/Gates coaliton is back…all we
need is colin powell and the US will be able to restore
it’s image in the world as a leader in the fight
against terrorism rather than as a bull in a china
shop which relies on makebelieve facts to justify
going to war..sue kelly needed to answer the following
question “IF YOU KNEW THEN WHAT YOU KNOW NOW WOULD
YOU HAVE STILL VOTED TO AUTHORIZE THE PRESIDENT TO GO
TO WAR” HAD SHE DONE SO SHE WOULD STILL BE IN CONGRESS
