Never too late

Westchester legislators, who have taken to using large blocs of time at the beginning of their twice-monthly meetings for various ethnic-heritage celebrations and other commemorations, will mark yet another one this coming Monday: the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian revolution. Most other pols marked the anniversary of the October 1956 event last month; Gov. George Pataki even led the United States’ delegation to Hungary for the occasion.

Board Minority Leader George Oros, R-Cortlandt, who is of Hungarian descent, is apparently behind this one, which, according to his press release, will “honor Hunagrians’ historic role in the ultimate defeat of Communism in Eastern Europe.” The event “will feature a musical performance of traditional Hungarian songs, including a csardas, by Miklos and Lehel Ujvari;” there will also be remarks from Hungarian Consul General Gabor Horvath.

Oros noted the celebration is “in keeping with a rich tradition of periodically recognizing the contributions of the diverse ethnic and cultural groups that make up Westchester County.”
