One other side note to my story today on pay rates at the Westchester County Board of Legislators is the question of what’s happened with the position of board clerk. Perry Ochacher served as clerk and chief of staff until about a year ago, when he stepped aside into a position being called the board’s legislative counsel. His deputy clerk and deputy chief of staff was Tina Seckerson, who stepped into the acting clerk role and was said to be in consideration for the permanent job.
A year later, Seckerson is still in the “acting” role. So what gives?
Minority Leader George Oros, R-Cortlandt, said he had brought the issue up with Majority Leader Martin Rogowsky, D-Harrison, “on several occasions.” “He keeps saying they’re going to address it in their caucus,” Oros said. “We’ve discussed it in our caucus; we think she should have been named clerk a long time ago.”
Board Chairman Bill Ryan, D-White Plains, said legislators “will decide that shortly,” probably as part of a larger discussion about board staffing for 2007. Ryan said the discussion will have to include whether to keep the position as both clerk and chief of staff, which would call for a higher level of responsibility, or whether to create a clerk-only position. “I know both caucuses have been discussing it but they haven’t reached a final decision as to how they see the clerk going forward,” he said.

It really makes you wonder what is taking them so long to make a decision. Tina Seckerson has been ‘acting clerk’ for a year, proving that she obviously is capable of performing the duties of this role. Seems to me that the male dominated world of politics is fearful of another strong woman being put in a leadership role. It is a shame to say that in the year 2006, women still do not get the same treatment as men in many career fields, politics and finance especially.
This story proofs much more interesting than the one printed regarding the staff salaries which causes a buzz for the first few days and is then forgotten. This should have made front page! I am sure lots of women would be interested in this tid bit.
