Group says state health-care proposal would compromise reproductive rights

Family Planning Advocates of New York, a reproductive rights advocacy organization, said some of the recommendations in the Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century’s report this week (a.k.a. the hospital closing commission) show a “stunning disregard for women’s health.”
JoAnn Smith, head of the organization, decried the proposal to close Bellevue Woman’s Hospital, the only women’s hospital dedicated solely to women’s health. Smith said the report, released earlier this week, suggests it is acceptable to ban reproductive health services from some hospitals. The commission is recommending a merger of religious and non-sectarian hospitals in Elmira, Kingston, Niagara Falls and Schenectady. It suggests that reproductive health care would be moved from the hospital setting and provided at a location “proximate” to the merged hospitals, according to the group.
“This is an unrealistic proposition that fails to promote efficient health-care delivery and shows disrespect for women’s health needs. Stigmatizing reproductive health services is not acceptable,” Smith said in a letter to state legislative leaders today.
Outgoing Gov. George Pataki said Wednesday he would approve the report and forward it to the Legislature shortly. Lawmakers have until the end of the year to approve the report in its entirety, similar to base-closing reports at the federal level.
