Joseph Bruno appears to be safe in his bid to be elected to a sixth term as Senate majority leader Wednesday. But there will be a dissenting vote.
Sen. John Bonacic of Mt. Hope in Orange County said he plans to vote no â€â€Å“ a highly unusual position.
“I think there is a cloud over Sen.Bruno,’’ Bonacic said after emerging from a closed-door meeting of Senate Republicans late Tuesday. “There is a federal grand jury convened. This is serious stuff.
Bruno acknowledged last month that his business dealings are being probed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. But he said he is not a target of the probe.
Nassau Sen. Dean Skelos has been maneuvering behind the scenes for years to set himself up as a replacement for Bruno, 77.
Bruno’s position was weakened in November when ally Nicholas Spano of Yonkers was defeated by Democrat Andrea Stewart Cousins. The GOP majority dminished to 33-28 when Nassau Sen. Michael Balboni announced last week he was taking a top Spitzer administration position.
Many think Bruno’s continued tenure rests on the Republicans holding that seat in a special election.
