Westchester legislature: Special election edition

Posted by: Liz Anderson - Posted in Uncategorized on Jan 02, 2007

A special election to replace Andrea Stewart-Cousins on the Westchester County Board of Legislators is expected to be set for Feb. 13, with the winner serving the second and final year of her two-year term representing Yonkers.

The Democratic candidate is expected to be real estate broker and city Democratic Chairman Ken Jenkins, who is seeking the nomination at a mini-convention on Thursday. Jenkins, the former head of the Yonkers NAACP, also serves as a Democratic political analyst for News 12, where he is tapped to comment on county-wide issues for “Newsmakers” and also tapes a regular point/counterpoint segment aired in Yonkers. Jenkins said he would give up the unpaid role if he formally becomes the party’s candidate for the open seat.

Republicans are still scouting for a candidate, but Chairman Zehy Jereis said he focused on enlisting Greg du Sablon, executive director of the YMCA on Riverdale Avenue. Du Sablon said he expected to talk the matter over with his family and to pray about it, and had promised Jereis a decision by Friday. Among the issues he would need to resolve is residency; he currently lives in Ossining, but said he would be willing to move back to Yonkers, his former home.

Stewart-Cousins, a Democrat, won election to the state Senate in November when she defeated Republican Nick Spano.

Ken Jenkins is a gentleman and will be a good representative for his legislative district. Ken understand the issues that the residents face in his district and would be the best person to serve as legislator.
