Actor Richard Gere, a practicing Buddhist, found a way to pass the time tranquilly as the 110th Congress went about the business of selecting the new House Speaker and swearing in its 435 members.
Gere, who was seated in a box reserved for friends and family of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, unraveled a long necklace of brown beads that he wore as a braclet around his left arm and rubbed them between his fingers like worry beads.
The lengthy roll call vote ended and Gere’s strand of beads disappeared again under the cuff of his jacket.

yay! mr. gere was performing a buddhist blessing…very auspicious and needed for our congress. 2 new reps are buddhist as well, one from georgia and one from hawaii. with a similar peaceful consciousness manifesting in speaker pelosi and others, hopefully we can bring the troops home soon and more people will be enlightened to the virtues of pacifism since we are all interdependent…
