And he’s off…
Ken Jenkins, chairman of the Yonkers Democratic party, was officially selected yesterday to be the Democratic candidate in a special election for the Westchester County Board of Legislators.
Jenkins is seeking the seat recently vacated when Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, won election to the state senate. The special election is expected to be set for Feb. 13.
He said he would focus on “ensuring the dollars we’ve expended in the budget are adequate and effectively spent on the programs people needâ€? in the district; Jenkins said he also wanted to keep tabs on local development, including plans by Consolidated Edison to dig up Tuckahoe Road for a transmission line project. As a legislator, he said, he would work to ensure any lane closings “are done in a way that makes some sense.”
His first fundraiser is set for Jan. 18 at the Royal Regency hotel on Tuckahoe Road. Jenkins said the suggested donation is a minimum of $99; he’s hoping for 150 people.
The GOP, meanwhile, has yet to cement its ticket. YMCA director Greg du Sablon, said to be considering a run, told me today he was waiting to speak further with city Republican chairman Zehy Jereis, but did not expect to do so or announce a decision until sometime next week.
There’s no deadline yet for when parties have to declare their candidates; that will be set by the Board of Elections after the Board of Legislators officially sets the election date.
UPDATE: Jereis said this afternoon that the GOP has two other candidates also interested in running, and will need to decide who the best candidate is to run a race in the shortened special election season.
The others who have voiced interest, he said, are Julius Walls, head of the Greyston Foundation, and Cicely Greaves-Vega, a community activist who ran against Stewart-Cousins in 2005. He also noted that du Sablon, who currently lives in Ossining, faces a residency issue as well as possible conflicts with his job at the Y.
He said he expected the Republican Party would have to pick its candidate roughly 10 days after the special election is set, or by about Jan. 18.

answer to JSII.until mr spezio is indicted and convicted
of a a crime..he is not a thief..you may not like him
and you may think he is involved in shady dealings..but
in order for you to call him a thief there must be proof
beyond a reasonable doubt otherwise you are subjecting
yourself unnecessarily to a libel suit..since mr
spezio is not a public figure…so i suggest that
you coucne your accustations by stating the facts
and asking the reader to draw there own conclusions
klnd of like with cavalo…you can’t actually say
he misused the independence club money but you can
point out that filings showed that certain unexplained
expenditures were made…and then let the facts speak
for themselves….that would be the smart way to proceed
mike is right!!!

In an interview, Spiezio took credit for a 2001 sweep by inspectors that shut nine businesses. The closings prompted some to say he went too far.
“He’s part of a small clique that is helping decide which buildings are being targeted for violations, said attorney Debra Cohen, who represents downtown property owners opposed to the ballpark.
At the same time, federal and city records show, some of his Yonkers properties were written up for various safety violations.
