Bruno to Yonkers: don’t worry

Posted by: Jay Gallagher - Posted in Uncategorized on Jan 08, 2007

So, now that Nick Spano is a private citizen, how will the interests of Yonkers fare in the state Senate? Not to worry, Majority Leader Joseph Bruno said today.

“We’re very objective and very pragmatic,’’ Bruno said, when what changes Yonkers residents might expect with Democrat Andrea Stewart-Cousins replacing Republican Spano in the Senate.

“You have to think in terms of what’s best for he constituency there,’’ he said.

Bruno said that Mayor Philip Amicone “has been in a couple of times already.’’ to talk to him. “Our intent is to do everything we can to be as helpful as we can to constituents there,’’ Bruno said.

Of course, there are some who think Bruno won’t bend over backwards quite as far for Stewart Cousins as for Spano, who was an important factor in Republicans holding onto their slim (now 33-28) majority in the Senate.

Spano seemed to get just about anything he wanted from Bruno for the last two years after he beat Stewart Cousins by a mere 18 votes in 2004. But it wasn’t enough and she beat him in a rematch last November.

One Democrat had a more hard-headed reason for thinking Yonkers might continue to get more than its share of state money for the next few years: Democratic Gov. Eliot Spitzer.

“Spitzer has to protect Yonkers,’’ the Democrat said. “He’s got to protect Stewart Cousins,’’ for whom Spitzer campaigned last fall.

  1. Albany

Bruno has way too many mouths to feed. He has long moved on from the Spano loss. His other Senators are in big trouble for 2008. That is where the money will go.

Spitzer and Cousins will take very good care of Yonkers. Yonkers is not in trouble. This is just a bunch of Spano hacks trying to spread fear that Yonkers cannot get anything without Spano’s connection to Bruno.

Reform is here and it is good for New York and probably even bettter for Yonkers.

  2. THE CONSULTANT

i am starting to believe that elliot will protect andrea
and that bruno, in an effort to save what he has left
ie a slim senate majority will go along, understanding
that the republicans are not about to recapture the
seat in a presidential and that if bruno looses the
    senate, then what’s the point….

  3. The A-bomber

I think Andrea will be able to do well for the 35th dist.I just hope Sen.Bruno does not play games when it comes to dealing with her!

  4. Albany

The Senate Republicans are not worried about democratic districts.

Shelley Silver will likely re-draw Mike Spano’s Assembly District.

Spitzer will work with Andrea to help Yonkers.

It’s not logical any other way.

but of course, Bruno’s lying, as I recently read, um, right here
