Looking (too) far afield?

January

(From guest blogger and Greenburgh town reporter Rebecca Baker:)

Greenburgh Town Board member Steve Bass, not satisfied with tackling problems within the town, wants the Town Board to support war-torn Darfur. Bass, who works for Westchester County, plans to introduce a resolution at tomorrow night’s Town Board meeting calling on President Bush and the U.S. Congress to increase funding for humanitarian aid to the Darfur region of Sudan.

Bass said the Town Board has passed similar measures opposing the Patriot Act and the Iraq War.

“This situation is equally as disastrous, he said in an e-mail. “Please join with the Town Board in urging Congress and the President to increase the funding for humanitarian aid by writing letters to members of Congress and the President asking them to take the necessary actions to end this tragedy.

But Bass’ interest in Darfur has already been met with criticism and skepticism. Resident Hal Samis, known in Greenburgh for his constant e-mails questioning the Greenburgh Public Library project, asked Bass if his resolution was the kick-off to this year’s re-election campaign.

“The issue is not that Darfur is not a real tragedy, but the presumption that the Greenburgh Town Board, without the benefit of any real poll of its residents, has decided to again trod down the path of promoting â€ËÅ“feel good’ resolutions, the only good being to people like yourself,â€? Samis wrote.

I think it is great to have as many people talking about the tragedy as possible. I understand local pressure, because our federal government has done little over the years to stop it. We need all the help we can get to stop it. Even if it is a national/international issue, local pressure has done plenty to start to change the tide of history. Bravo Mr. Bass.
