What did she say?
As expected, day one Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign was a major media event.
More than two-dozen television crews and countless photogrpahers and reporters jammed into a Manhattan health clinic for the senator’s first press availability since declaring her intention to run for president. Also joining the fray were several local families and their children, all anxiouus for a glimpse of the famous senator.
Making matters worse was the fact that the room did not contain a sound system, forcing Clinton and the other speakers to shout above the din. All this made for a grumpy press corps, many of whom could barely hear anything that was being said by the senator and others at the podium.
As for Clinton, she used the event – which was listed on her senatorial schedule – to announce legislation that would re-authorize and expand the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
“Every child should have access to quality, affordable health care,” Clinton said, in what is likely to be a pillar of her presidential campaign.
Almost upstaging Clinton, though, were two toddlers who stood holding hands with the senator as she waited her turn to speak. Camilla Harden (almost 4-years-old) and Olivia Harden (almost 2-years-old) probably didn’t realize it, but they provided Clinton with the first major photo-op of her campaign.
