Backers For Stark? (updated)

Posted by: Yancey Roy - Posted in Uncategorized on Feb 07, 2007

With less than two hours to go before the Legislature votes on a new comptroller, various scenarios are possibly developing. One notion gaining momentum is that the Senate Democrats will back New York City’s Finance Commissioner Martha Stark, who was one of the three finalists nominated by the bipartisan panel that screened candidates.
Malcolm Smith, leader of the Senate Democrats, has scheduled a 1:30 p.m. news conference about the vote. Senate Dems are seen as wanting to be loyal to Gov. Eliot Spitzer on this one.

Meanwhile, a Republican might join them. Sen. John Bonacic, R-Orange County—who riled his colleagues a few weeks ago by calling on Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno to step down amid an FBI investigation—has indicated he’d back Stark as well.

UPDATE: Bonacic has put out a statement  announcing his support for Stark and bashing his fellow legislators for rejecting the list of finalists.
