Long Island assemblyman gets the vote
It’s official. The Legislature has voted Long Island Assemblyman Tom DiNapoli, a Democrat, as the state’s new comptroller.
After Assembly Democrats emerged from a closed-door conference today, they united behind DiNapoli to replace disgraced former Comptroller Alan Hevesi. There were no nominations for Assemblyman Richard Brodsky, D-Greenburgh, Joseph Morelle, D-Irondequoit, Monroe County, or any other legislators who were vying for the spot. New York City Finance Commissioner Martha Stark, one of three finalists picked by a screening panel, was backed by Senate Democrats and Gov. Eliot Spitzer, but the vote was overwhelming for DiNapoli. The two other finalists, Westchester County business executive Bill Mulrow and Nassau County Comptroller Howard Weitzman, were not nominated.
Going in alphabetical order, the Legislature reached 107 votes for DiNapoli—a majority of the 212-seat Legislature—when Sen. Frank Padavan, R-Queens, voted for him.
Hevesi resigned in December after pleading guilty to using a state worker to chauffeur and run errands for his wife.
