Bruno continues to make nice

Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno continued his love-and-kisses offensive today, trying to make nice for a second day in a row with our combative governor, Eliot Spitzer.

In an interview on WROW-AM radio, Bruno, who Wednesday delivered roses to Spitzer and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver as Valentine’s Day peace offerings, was reminded that the title of Spitzer’s biography is “Spoiling for a Fight.’’

“I’m spoiling for peace. I’m spoiling for togetherness,’’ said Bruno, who has clashed recently with Spitzer over a special Senate election in Nassau County and the selection of new state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. Referring to Spitzer, he said he was willing to “cut him some slack. Let people feel their oats.’’

But the former Army light-heavyweight boxer, also indicated he was ready to mix it up, if that’s what Spitzer wants.

“If you’re looking for a fight, it’s easy enough to find,’’ he said. “But nobody sure as hell is going to beat me into submission,’’ and he said he’s sure the same goes for Silver.

The three combatants at some point will all have to smile at each other and shake hands if the state is ever to get a budget approved. The deadline, which was missed 20 years in a row before the string was broken in 2005, is April 1.
