New chief for state police

February
23

Gov. Eliot Spitzer today named First Deputy Superintendent Preston L. Felton as interim superintendent of the State Police.

Spitzer said Felton, who will take over from retiring Supt. Wayne Bennett, had demonstrated a “vast array of skills and abilities as both a top administrator and a field commander” over more than 22 years on the force. Felton had served as first deputy since November 2003.

According to Spitzer’s office, a national search will be conducted for a permanent hire for the job.
