Flooding hits home for Lowey
The heavy rains and flooding that struck the region last week inundated parts of Rep. Nita Lowey’s district – including the congresswoman’s own basement.
“My basement was full of water,” Lowey said today.
Lowey said she spent part of the weekend touring Sound Shore areas affected by the flooding and was particularly struck by the impact the storm had on Fong’s Laundry, a family-run business in Rye. She came across the owner and his family as they were attempting to clean up.
“This is his livelihood, this is his future,” Lowey said. “All his equipment was in the basement…This means thousands of dollars to someone who can ill-afford to lose it.”
Lowey said her staff is compiling damage reports from the area and investigating what, if any, federal aid can be made available to storm victims.
The Harrison Democrat held a press conference this morning at LaGuardia Airport to blast the Bush administration for threatening to veto legislation implementing the recommendations of the Sept. 11th Commission because of a provision that would give collective bargaining rights to airport security screeners.
