Legislature expected to approve moving up presidential primary

March
21

Both houses of the Legislature plan to pass today a measure that would move up New York’s presidential primaries from March 4 of next year to Feb. 5. That would make the Empire State part of the new ‘Super Tuesday’ when several large states will hold the presidential voting.

Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who hasn’t yet endorsed Sen. Hilary Clinton for president, hasn’t said whether he’ll sign it.

Moving up the date is viewed as an advantage for both Democrat Clinton and former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who is leading polls in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. They can both expect big wins in their home state as they try to maintain their leads.
