Count Van Count

The Sesame Street character with a penchant for enumerating wasn’t there this morning. But at a press conference called by Congressman John Hall to announce some private, charitable funding, counting came up.

The Dyson Foundation in Dutchess County was giving Putnam County $400,000 for a planned senior-citizen center. Robert Dyson, the foundation’s president, told the crowd he was happy to learn that Putnam County Executive Robert Bondi was also the county’s chief financial officer. The two had apparently spoken about the money and the project as part of the foundation’s decision to provide the grant.

“So at least you know you have a county executive who knows how to count,” Dyson said.

Bondi was next at the podium, opening with a remark that kind of fell flat on a room full of taxpayers.

“Unfortunately, in talking with many of the people here this morning, the numbers I counted up for the tax increase were a little too high,” he said.

Last year, the Legislature approved a $121.3 million budget for this year that increases the county property tax by 18.65 percent. And, earlier this month in his annual State of the County address, Bondi predicted a county property-tax increase next year that could soar as high as 66 percent.

You can read more about Hall, Dyson and the planned center in tomorrow’s paper.
