“Children are more important than plants”

How is a law born? Someday, Daniel Hoffer and Vincent Lepidi may know. The two boys, students in the sixth grade at Saint Eugene’s School in Yonkers, recently emailed three Westchester County legislators from that city about a Rockland proposal that’s been in the news.
“We are writing you because we read that Rockland County might make a law that will fine any parent that smokes in the car with their children in it,” the boys wrote. “We think that is a great idea because we know how bad second hand smoke is. We did our science fair experiment on the effect of second hand smoke on plants. We Won first place! Since children are more important than plants – we think the law will protect children. We hop you can tell the legislature to pass that Law for Westchester County.”
Andera Ettere, a legislative aide, responded: “I thank you for contacting Legislator (Bernice) Spreckman and will forward your remarks to her immediately. We were not aware of the proposed law in Rockland but we will look into (it) right away.” Ettere also promised to forward the note to the health and environment committee chairs.
“Congratulations on winning first place in your science project and we thank you for your serious interest in local laws and the health of the youth in our community,” Ettere added.

Poor kids. They will learn never to contact a Westchester “legislator”, specially one from Yonkers.
