Firefighters to protest Amicone’s speech

Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone will deliver his State of the City Address at City Hall tomorrow night.

Outside the building, city firefighters will hold a rally to demand that Amicone settle their two-year-old contract dispute with the city.

“The Yonkers Firefighters are simply asking for a fair and equitable cost-of-living increase in their salaries,” said Hugh Fox, Jr., president of Yonkers Firefighters of I.A.F.F. Local 628, in a press release. “That’s what we want the mayor to hear loud and clear.”

With the firefighters a potent politial force in the city, the union protest and the ongoing contract dispute could add to the difficulties faced by Amicone, who is running for re-election this year. The mayor is already involved in a bitter political fued with the leader of his own party, GOP boss Zehy Jereis.
