The minority leader of the Westchester County Board of Legislators wants the board to weigh in on Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s proposed hospital cuts. George Oros, R-Cortlandt, forwaded a draft resolution to colleagues this week asking them to approve it or, alternately, sign a letter to the administration to the same effect.
“These cuts are severe and would drastically impact all Westchester hospitals and in particular result in a financial step back for the Westchester Medical Center,” Oros wrote. “While all of us believe in the need to reduce state spending, this avenue seems to be a dead end.”
The proposed resolution uses stronger language, suggesting the “primary reasons for escalating health care cuts include abuses by HMOs, insurance carriers and uncontrolled malpractice claims” that should be checked. It adds that it “would be irresponsible for this Board of Legislators to now remain silent when the executive budget seeks to impose these drastic, devastating and hurtful cuts upon Westchester County health care institutions and their patients and employees….”
The matter was sent to the health and budget committees for consideration.
