Amicone: I need loyal Republicans

March
29

Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone, who was the guest of honor at tonight’s county GOP dinner, did not mention his ongoing and bitter feud with city Republican Chairman Zehy Jereis during his remarks to the audience.

But it may have been on his mind when he said: “As the mayor of Westchester’s largest city and the fourth largest city in New York State, I will do my part to ensure the strength and protect the integrity of our party.”

Amicone, who is running for re-election this year, called 2007 a critical year for local Republicans.

“I’m here tonight to ask for your help as 2007 is an imporant year in the city of Yonkers,” said Amicone, who received a standing ovation when he stated his intention to run for re-election. “I will need the support of loyal Republicans in Yonkers and throughout Westchester County.”

Amicone, however, may have been a little dismayed by the comments of former state Sen. Nicholas Spano, who spoke just before Amicone and is being urged by some in Yonkers to run for mayor.

“I lust for the day I return to public office and maybe some day I’ll do it,” said Spano, who received the loudest applause of the night.

NICK SPANO IS THE ONLY HOPE THAT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY COULD WIN CITY HALL. NICK SPANO HAS THE SUPPORT OF LABOR UNIONS AND ALSO THE MINOR PARTY LINES. AMICONE HAS ALIENATED EVERYONE.

  2. the consultant

why would nick want to be the mayor after being the third
most powerful republican in the state senate…
I think he was alluding to challenging cousins when it
becomes clear she is unable to deliver

  3. the consultant

the use of the term loyal republicans was a direct jab
at zhey jeries and his crew who are loyal only to themselves and their pocketbooks…jeries has already
made it clear he is an enemy of the mayor …and that
is in the face of the broad support in the yonkers repubiican party enjoyed by the mayor…jeries can
support anyone he wants..but he made a deal with
the ward leaders to back the mayor.in return for
    keeping his position..now he
has welched on the deal..and he should relinquish
    his chairmanship

What does Amicone know about being a loyal Republican? I have been a republican district leader in Yonkers for many years and never saw Amicone hand in any petitions or help out Republican candidates before he ran for Mayor. As Deputy Mayor he didn’t even help his then boss John Spencer get elected. Amicone doesn’t know what it means to be a Republican, except when he wants to get elected.
