Mondello: The GOP’s bankrupt and Spitzer’s a bully

Posted by: Glenn Blain - Posted in Uncategorized on Mar 29, 2007

State GOP boss Joseph Mondello did not sugarcoat the party’s current state of affairs during remarks to Westchester Republicans tonight, saying the state organization is “bankrupt” and needs to “start all over again” with grassroots recruiting.

But Mondello urged Republicans not to get discouraged and predicted that it was only a matter of time before Democrats in Albany “self destruct.” He took special aim at Gov. Eliot Spitzer.

“He’s a bully,” Mondello said. “He loves to push people around and he’s proving that each day of the week…He will run afoul of a lot of folks and he will be short lived.”

Mondello was one of the featured speakers at the annual Chairwoman’s Dinner of the Westchester Republican Committee. The dinner, the county GOP’s biggest fundraiser of the year, attracted fewer than 300 people to the Rye Town Hilton, with many bolting for the door as soon as the speeches ended — and before the dinner was actually served.

During his remarks, Mondello shed little light on who he would favor during the 2008 presidential race. He described Rudy Giuliani as a “great, great candidate” but quickly added “so is John McCain.

Mondello also declined to give an opinion on the ongoing feud between Yonkers GOP Chairman Zehy Jereis and city Mayor Phil Amicone, a Republican. Mondello said he’d only been made aware of the feud a few hours earlier and intended to look into the matter.

for mondello not to be aware of the political
landscape in a swing county like westchester
shows just how bankrupt the party really is..
less than 300…we used to get 700

for someone who claims to be such a die hard and loyal republican, it’s funny we didn’t see you there this year (or last year, or the year before…)

for someone who has done as much for republican candidates
over the years..maybe I’m pissed at the lack of recognition
by my own party…whose candidates I have defended and worked for for over 30 years..so now I feel free to express my personal views as a republican..only yesterday I received
a call from a major PAC in texas seeking my judgement on
future candidates for congress in this state…

  4. anti consultant

WOW, maybe you need to see someone about all that bitterness.

The lack of recognition comes because a lot of leaders and candidates do not agree that you have been a defender of the party or our candidates over the years. Its funny that more often than not Kenny had better things to say about GOP candidates than you did.

While it’s nice for Mondello come to Westchester to attend an uncrowded fundraiser, maybe he should have spent some time in Nassau County on Tuesday, where his hometown GOP was getting crushed in two special elections (by roughly 5-1 and 4-1 margins).

Other than loyalty to the about-to-be-indicted Joe Bruno, what exactly does this guy bring to the job?

consultant was always paid never helped a candidate unless he was getting something in return. THE PIRRO DEFENDER

  7. the consultant

sorry you think that…looks like you all have very short
memories…from Vergari to Martinelli..to 90% of the judges
and the present district attorney I have been over the years
instrumental in their election campaigns..I have defended
virtually every canidadate who has ever run for office
inlcuding jeanine, and nick, and spencer both before
he ran against zeleski and after, and now
phil amicone all the legistors, the clerk
and the county exec..but this last time around you chose
a slate of statewide candidates that were unelectable..
candidates that didnt deserve support and didnt even
    get the base repubican vote
And the reason is becuase you and the party have sold
out to the minor parties…you let cavalo pick your
canidates in westchester and you let mike long pick your
candidates statewide..you are not republicans you
are opportunists…Mondello said it best..the party
is bankrupt and the wetschester party led the way to
    that bankruptcy…
And to the poster who has a problem with me being
compensated for running campaigns…talk to kieran
mahoney, tom doherty, arthur finklestein, hank
sheinkopf, mark penn…they don;t work for nothing
and running a campaign is like running a business
its not carrying signs and giving out literature
which by the way I did for years WITHOUT GETTING PAID
so check your history before you accuse….and just remember
one thing..all the candidates for whom I have consulted
called me…I didn’t solicit them…in fact word of mouth
was how I got the accounts…and running a campaign is
a full time job..but you probably wouldn’t know about that
but one thing is certain ..with under 300 people at the
dinner..many of them comps…this party leadership is
tired and obsolete..when will the executive committee
decide to rebuild…even joe mondello recognized that
Republcian principles are still winners if we reject
the control that the cavalos of this world continue
to have over us….that may take some time but it
    will be worth it…

You are so right. The GOP has been a slave to Cavallo. Why are they still helping and supporting him? Jereis and Cavallo – birds of a feather flock together. People like Ciampoli and other GOP people are helping him as well. People like Doug Colety. The Gop will fall apart, if they don’t cut the strings from Cavallo. Also Jereis, Colety and Panio need to step down for the good of the party. There needs to be new, fresh blood filled with integrity. In closing, for the County Ind Party, Integrity will soon be coming.

  9. used to be a republican

THE GOP IS BANKRUPT BECAUSE OF DEFENDING CAVALOW ORGANIZED CRIME ORGANIZATION!!!HOW MUCH DID THEY PAY FOR CHIMPOLI SO FAR ?HOW MUCH DOES SLEAXY PARISI GET?
HOW MUCH MONEY DID THE STATE GOP FUNNEL INTO THE “CLUB” SO CAVALOW CAN PAY HIS BILLS??THE AMEX CARD ?TOO MANY TOO LIST ,ALL FUNDED FOR AND APPROVED BY THE STATE AND LOCAL GOP!!!!

THAT WHY THE GOP IS BROKE AND LOSING GROUND!!!

  10. Delfim Heusler

You are right on all points. Cavallo is the reason that the GOP’s going down.

  11. the consultant

Cavallo is symptomatic of an underlying problem..anytime
you allow a minor party with a tiny membership to
cross endorse you are opening the flood gates to
intellectual and actual extortion…whether the conservative party on a statewide basis, or the
so called Independence party here in westchester,
by permitting cross endorsement you are forcing
the party which has less registered voters ie
the republican party to make deals, sell out,
abdicate, and bribe the minor parties because
they believe it is impossible to win without the
    multiple endorsements….As the Republican party
has witnessed they are slowly becomming irrelevant in
new york..With about 250 people at their annual
dinner they are clearly irrelevant in westchester
and with a city leader under subpoena in yonkers
they are simply in the process of rearranging the
    deck chairs on the Titanic
