Want to be a delegate?

March
30

The state Democratic Party today announced their plans to fill delegate slates for the Feb. 5, 2008 presidential primary and a public education program to help people through the process. Democratic voters on primary day will elect 151 delegates and 25 alternates on a congressional district basis.

The specific number of delegates elected in each of the state’s 29 congressional districts depends on a formula that gives equal weight to population (as of the 2000 census) and the Democratic presidential vote in the 2000 and 2004 general elections.

People wishing to be a delegate need to obtain, at the most, 500 signatures on their nominating petitions. To appear on the statewide ballot, presidential candidates must obtain 5,000 signatures.

Overall, New York’s Democratic delegation to the Democratic National Convention in Denver will total 280 delegates and 39 alternates. In addition to district-level delegates, 85 delegates and 14 alternates will be chosen by the Democratic State Committee at the state convention in May, 2008.

About 30 delegate positions will be reserved for Democratic Party leaders and Democratic elected officials in the State. Governor Eliot Spitzer, former President Bill Clinton, and all Democratic members Congress are among the automatic members of the delegation.

Brodsky has a set and he is not scared to use them. He says what is on his mind and does not bite his tongue. I respect him for standing up for what he believes in.
