More pols weigh in
Here’s part of the statement from Congressman John Hall on today’s incident at Indian Point:
“Today, as always, we are told by Entergy and the NRC that there is no danger to the public health. That is what every utility says, what the NRC always says. Their credibility is, to put it kindly, insufficient to reassure us when 8% of the population of the entire United States lives within the 50 mile radius of this plant. This is the only plant we know that was scouted out by one of the 9/11 terrorists as a possible target, an aging plant with a history of ‘unusual events’ and not one that should be rubber-stamped for another 20 years of operation. I join with my colleagues in the House and Senate in calling for an immediate Independent Safety Assessment.
And Westchester County Legislator Tom Abinanti, D-Greenburgh, told me this afternoon:
“You can repair the engine of a car only so many times, you can replace the car only so many times until the car starts to fall apart. The question is have we reached that point with Indian Point? I think we have…. It’s another indication that it’s time to close it down.â€?

I predict more operating incidents, because those who provide our power, under a microscopic political lens, will operate their plant competently and normally, with the normal work incidents happening, just like in any real world work enterprise, and each time a normal parameter change, outage, or accident occurs, the elected hustlers who are failing to provide any alternative power plants will feel a political need to weigh in, as if they knew anything, or had some kind of alternative, (They do not).
Each time they will say (as they just have) something very close to this:
” This latest incident only proves what I (we) had predicted long ago that (closure/inspection/reversion to the stone age-pick one) is our only hope, and we promise to see that it occurs at the earliest possible…...” on & on & on ….. yadda…yadda…yadda.
Our retort to THEM at times such as this must be:
“SHOW US THE NEW POWER PLANTS ! ”
If they cannot, then they have failed, and are misleading us, to cover up this failure to act. The Indian Point plants ought not be both relied on utterly by the ploiticoes for electrical power AND cursed by them as having to go away, for political points.
This ignorant duplicity will end up in the screwing of the public, no matter what happens.
That is: politicoes….. not ploiticoes
My apologies.
Hall is an embarrassment. The transformer fire had nothing whatsoever to do with nuclear safety, or an “aging” plant. (Everything ages from the minute it is created. And we wouldn’t have so many older nuclear plants if the anti-nuke crazies didn’t make new ones all but impossible for the last 30 years). Hall’s comment shows him to be little more than a grandstanding alarmist and empty suit.
