Freshman Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee, D-Suffern, called this morning to chat about her first few months on the job and especially her push for more funding for Rockland schools.
Jaffee said she helped bring in millions of extra dollars over what Gov. Eliot Spitzer had proposed, including an more than $1.4 million for the East Ramapo school district and an extra $704,468 for the Pearl River school district, the latter of which is a 10.56 percent increase over Spitzer’s budget.
In total, Rockland schools are getting an additional $14,695,130 more than last year’s budget, according to numbers Jaffee put out today.
During her campaign for the 95th Assembly District seat last year, Jaffee spoke at most public appearances about the need for a change in the school funding formulas to give the schools more money and the taxpayers a break on property taxes.
She said her work this year in the budget was the result of “saying it over and over again” in conference and in committee.
This year’s budget, she said today, allows for more predictability and transparency, but isn’t without its problems.
For example, Jaffee said the 3 percent cap on “save harmless” districts, which includes all of Rockland. While it guarantees some money for the districts, she said, there shouldn’t be a cap on how much the districts can receive based on need.

Sounds like this Jaffe lady got the job done for her schools in Rockland County. It’s pathetic that our Westchester Assemblymembers couldn’t do the same for our schools. They couldn’t legislate their way out of a wet paper bag.
