Congressman John Hall has traded in his Subaru Outback, produced by a Japanese automaker, for an American-made Mercury Mariner.
A longtime environmentalist, Hall said he bought the new hybrid “to put his money where his mouth is” on energy conservation and to show support for American auto workers who backed his 2006 campaign for Congress.
He expects the Mariner to get 33 miles to the gallon, a small gain over the 28 miles his Outback was getting.
Hall said he would have preferred a smaller American model that would get 40 miles to the gallon or a hybrid that would run most of the time on battery power.
“I asked why they didn’t offer the hybrid as a smaller car and not just the SUV,” Hall said. “They said it was (a decision by) management.”

This article’s writer seems to suggest that Congressman Hall’s former car, the Subaru Outback, was produced in Japan. In fact, his Outback was manufactured in Lafayette, Indiana, by American auto workers.
Jon, do you expect a “reporter” like Susan Elan to do research before writing a story? She just takes whatever Democrats tell her and regurgitates it.
