Schumer to FEMA: We’ll be watching

April
20

Sen. Charles Schumer and Rep. Nita Lowey toured the flood ravaged areas of Mamaroneck this morning and, afterward, said they expected President Bush to sign a disaster declaration that would allow local residents and business to receive federal aid.

Schumer also said that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has made improvements since the Katrina disaster of 2005. But he also warned that the agency must perform well in this crisis.

“I saw them when we had the flooding in the Catskills and Binghamton last June,” Schumer said. “It was a different FEMA. But this is FEMA’s first big test in the metropolitan area. And we’re telling FEMA the eyes of New York and the eyes of the country are upon you.”

As for the flood damage, Schumer said “It is utterly amazing how large the scale of damage has been….It’s hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of families.”
