Del Bello to serve on govt efficiency panel
Governor Eliot Spitzer today created the Commission on Local Government Efficiency and Competitiveness, which “will review ways that New York State’s over 4,200 local governments can save taxpayer dollars and become more efficient by sharing services and undertaking regional collaboration.”
The 15-member commission will be chaired by former New York Lieutenant Governor, Congressman, and Mayor of Jamestown, Stan Lundine. It will include a number of members recommended by legislators and the state comptroller; former Lt. Governor and Westchester County Executive Al Del Bello, a local lawyer (shown), is among Spitzer’s appointees to the panel.
Its tasks include “identifying barriers to more efficient local government through merger, consolidation and or regionalization of services, and partnerships that enable localities to provide services more efficiently. The Commission will also advance smart growth and other regional initiatives that can improve the efficiency, competitiveness and quality of life of New York’s localities.”
The preliminary analysis is due in a year. The public can weigh in at www.nyslocalgov.org. More from our Albany bureau “here”:http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070423/NEWS01/704230395.

Interesting that the panel doesn’t include any folks from the business world—who have to navigate the byzantine multi-layered governmental structures that continue to persist. Unless the Governor really leans in here—this will be yet another waste of time and money.
