Support for keeping Indian Point open

April

Those pollsters at Manhattanville College were at it again today, releasing more results from a poll of Westchester voters taken earlier this month. The results contained some interesting findings on issues that are often at the center of political debates in the county.

For starters, 47 percent of those surveyed agreed with the statement: “The Indian Point plant should remain open because it poses little or no risk and is important to the Westchester economy and keeping down the cost of electricity in our area.” Only 33 percent said the plant should be closed.

On the Tappan Zee Bridge, 54 percent said they favored a quicker reconstruction or replacement of the bridge rather than a more comprehensive project that would add a mass transportation element and require the taking of land through eminent domain. Only 35 percent supported the more comprehensive approach.

Most Westchester voters – 69 percent – viewed the Westchester Medical Center as a worthwhile use of taxpayer dollars. Only 19 percent opposed the use of taxpayer resources at the facility.

A majority of Westchester voters also support the expansion of the Westchester County Airport. Fifty-three percent said they wanted to see more commercial flights operate from the airport, compared to 30 percent who opposed that.

One Response to “Support for keeping Indian Point open”

Without any prompting by organized pro-nuclear outreach groups of any kind, and after seven long years of mainline anti-nuclear propaganda from at least 3 separate very well-funded sources, 47 percent would already vote FOR Indian Point, were an impartial referendum held tomorrow.

It seems the anti-nuclear propaganda is not reaching the people at large. Then why does it continue?

Wholly-owned issueless candidates-like Andrew Spano- have become, unfortunately, overly beholden to a few constituents, who have an organized mailing list that has become essential to their political survival.

(Please note that I did not use the word shill…).

Congressman Hall, is very wisely trying to break that apron string—the jury is still out on whether he will be able to.

Hillary Clinton is taking a higher road, trying to guide her camp to more inclusive ground.

Mssrs. Spitzer & Cuomo are getting blooded by the Albany meat grinder, and probably would tag gladly along with the 47% at this point.

It seems it is going to take some new kind of champion, if the anti-nuke true-believers could not win with names like Kennedy, Cuomo & Spitzer hawking their position.

Maybe if Eleanor Roosevelt returned, on the arm of old Pete Seeger!

Now there’s a vision for you!
