A new Quinnipiac “swing state” poll shows former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani leading Democrats in the swing states of Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Giuliani has lost some of the leads he held in previous polls over fellow GOP presidential candidates, however.
Also, in a twist of fancy (or not?), the poll throws the name of former Vice President Al Gore into the mix, finding that he does better than current Democratic presidential contenders in some GOP matchups. Here’s some more detail:
In Florida: Giuliani leads Clinton 49 percent to 41 percent, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama 49 to 38 percent, and Gore 47 to 43 percent. Clinton is still the leader among Democrats, with 36 percent of the vote, followed by Gore and then Obama; Giuliani leads the GOP field with 38 percent of the vote.
In Ohio: Giuliani leads Clinton 46 to 41 percent, Obama 45 to 37 percent, and Gore 47 to 39 pecent. Clinton leads the Democratic field, with 36 percent of the vote, followed by Gore and then Obama. Giuliani leads the GOP field with 29 percent.
In Pennsylvania: Giuliani leads Clinton 47 to 43 percent, leads Obama 45 percent to 41 percent, and ties Gore at 44 percent each. Clinton leads Democrats with 36 percent, followed by a tie between Gore and Obama at 14 percent. Giuliani leads Republicans with 29 percent.
“Sen. Obama may have matched Sen. Clinton in fundraising, but he hasn’t been able to close the gap among primary voters, where she leads by more than 2-1 in all three states,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. “He is still an unknown to more than a third of voters—which gives him an opportunity to move up.”
As for Gore, Brown quipped, “Perhaps absence makes the heart grow fonder.”

Giuliani has made clear that he is the only republican
to be able to keep mrs clinton out of the white
house. His problem of course is winning the republican
primary base voters whose allegiances are usually
to more conservative voters. Obama will not be the
democratic nominee and you will note he does not
do as well as mrs clinton even against Rudy..However
lurking in the backround, is Al Gore who, EVEN THOUGH
NOT A CANDIDATE, is holding is own against Rudy in
the swing states…should he decide to get into
the race, I believe that those in the democratic
party who are scared to death that Hillary cannot
win, and who are not comfortable with obama’s lack
of real experience will rally round Gore…
which might lead to a Gore Obama ticket ..now
that would be a potent democratic ticket against
any republican
