Clinton’s Iraq factor

Hillary Rodham Clinton’s vote in favor of the Iraq war is often described as an albatross hanging on her presidential campaign. But a WNBC/Marist poll out this evening shows that Iraq doesn’t seem to be as big a factor as some people think.

According to the national poll, only 9 percent of Democrats said her position on Iraq made it less likely they would support Clinton. On the flip side, 48 percent said it actually made it more likely that they would support her.

Overall, the poll showed Clinton with a comfortable lead over her Democratic rivals. She is favored by 35 percent of Democratic primary voters, compared to only 17 percent for Barack Obama and 15 percent for John Edwards.

Among Republicans, Rudy Giuliani is still the favorite. He was the choice of 28 percent of those surveyed, compared to 18 percent for Sen. John McCain.

In head-to-head match ups, Clinton leads both Giuliani and McCain by five percentage points
