Clinton says: Just text her

Sen. Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign announced a new text-message outreach initiative this morning.

Interested folks can text the word “Join” to 77007 and receive “regular campaign updates” about her activities, including event photos. “The campaign will also ask for voters’ input and offer a feature allowing supporters to surf Hillary’s website on their mobile phones,” according to the announcement.

“By harnessing the power of text messaging, we can engage voters in the political process using the latest technology and provide personalized, local campaign updates to our supporters nationwide,” Clinton said in a statement. “This is an exciting step forward that I hope will continue our conversation with voters in a new format.”

The campaign notes there are currently 236,000,000 cell phone users in the U.S., reaching 76% of the population. In December alone, there were 18.7 billion text messages sent – up 92% from 9.7 billion the year before.

Clinton is making a stop this morning in Westchester before heading to Albany to pick up the endorsement of Gov. Eliot Spitzer and other dignitaries.

(The text-message announcement didn’t go without a hitch; the first version of the press release had the wrong number to send your message to.)
