Panio makes it official: She’s leaving GOP post.

Westchester Republican Chairwoman RoseMarie Panio made it official today – she’s stepping down to run for Yorktown supervisor.

Panio, who was nominated last night by the Yorktown GOP to run for the town post, said she intends to leave office as county chairwoman as soon as the committee’s nominating petitions are in order. The petition-signing process starts next month.

“I’m excited about it,” Panio said. “It’s a new challenge.”

With Panio leaving, party Vice Chairman Bob Amelio, leader of the Harrison GOP, will become the acting chairman of the county committee. Unless the party’s executive committee decides to appoint another interim chairman, Amelio will remain in charge until the September re-organization meeting.

One candidate likely to be considered for the party post is New Rochelle Chairman Doug Colety, who sought the position in 2003 before losing out to Panio. Another name being circulated is Jeanne Martinelli, vice chairwoman of the Yonkers GOP.

Panio leaves behind a party that’s suffered several costly defeats in recent years, including last year’s loss by state Sen. Nicholas Spano. It has also seen its voter registration stall while Democratic enrollment has soared in Westchester.

Doug Colety will be a great chairman. He has the knowledge and experience for the job, and is the person that the Westchester GOP needs. Doug is the right person at the right time, and I know he will be a great county leader.

I agree with longtime republican. Doug is a goog guy and I know he will be a good chairman. Doug will help clean up the mess and put the party back on track.

as long as doug decides he is not going to make
money on the campaigns of the candidates he runs
he can be the leader..I doubt he will make that
    ethical committment

one questions for all the Doug supporters, what happens when the party goes no place and no elections are won, who will you all blame then??, we know who Moron Pinochio will blame and In the Know, I’m sure it will be Nick Spano, as they blame him for all Wetchester County problems.
