Clinton rallies women supporters
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton fit in an outdoor campaign rally with supporters in a key demographic between Senate floor votes Wednesday evening.
The event, held on a downtown parking lot during rush hour, drew a mostly female crowd.
“They clicked in 8,000 people,’’ Clinton announced. “We are going to make history together for our country.’’
Clinton, who leads the Democratic presidential field in early polls, celebrated the opening of “Club 44,’’ a code phrase for people who support her goal of becoming the 44th president.
Brown T-shirts with “Hillary’’ in turquoise lettering were sold for $20 and some attendees paid for entry, but the event was less of a fundraiser than an effort to engage supporters who might serve as volunteers.
Clinton repeated her recent call for withdrawing troops from Iraq and restoring respect for the United States around the world.
“The female focus here excited me,’’ said Julia Pudlin, a 22-year-old Yale graduate who works at the Department of Justice.
