Mehiel leaving hospital board

June
7

Dennis Mehiel, the one-time candidate for lieutenant governor and former chairman of the Westchester Democratic Party, is resigning from the Board of Directors of the Westchester Medical Center.

Mehiel’s resignation was announced last night by Board President Richard Berman, according to Journal News staff writer Melissa Klein, who covered last night’s board meeting. Mehiel, who has had a spotty attendance record as a member of the board, was not there.

The former head of the Sweetheart Cup Co., Mehiel was appointed to the board in late 2004, thanks largely to the support of his close friend, Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano. At the time, it was argued that Mehiel would provide much-needed business expertise to the struggling hospital.

Berman told the board last night that Mehiel was stepping down to concentrate on his business interests.
