Although, his younger brother caused a stir by defecting to the Democratic Party, former state Sen. Nicholas Spano says he remains a Republican and is committed to helping the Westchester GOP rebuild.
Spano, in a telephone interview on Friday, said he realized the difficulties caused by Mike Spano’s decision to bolt from the GOP and has told newly-elected Republican Chairman Douglas Colety that he will do whatever he can to help – including raising money for the party.
“I made a commitment to him that this decision by Michael is not going to diminish the role that I intend to l play in helping to rebuild the party,” Spano said.

What great news to hear that Nick Spano will try to “rebuild the Party” since he was the one most responsible for destroying it.
Gee, even Nick Spano sounds more grounded than the Consultant—who claims to be a (self-anointed) Republican mouthpiece, but sticks up for the defector Mike Spano.
The Consultant is his own breed of “Republican.” He makes excuses for Mike Spano rather than criticizing him for abandoning the Republican Party after so many years and all that support he received from the Republicans.
But that is because, in real life, the Consultant is a card-carrying member of the Spano-Pirro-Angelo Martinelli Party, not the Republican Party. The Consultant fools no one.

Johh Spencer was a disaster. He couldn’t win a ward in his home city. Faso is a nice guy but had no chance against Spitzer. Those two candidates were “sacrificial lambs” last year because the broken down Pataki machine is what really put the Republican Party in a deep hole.
No viable “moderate” was availabe to run, or could get enough backing to run, against Clinton or Spitzer.
But look at Mike Spano…he leaves the Assembly to “spend time with his family,” becomes a lobbyist, wants his seat back, the Spanos dump Mosiello, Mike wins the seat back just last November…and now becomes a Democrat. Huh? Just look at that very recent track record.
Do you think the Dems trust the Spanos? No way, no how. They know the Spanos are all about the Spanos, and nothing else. So don’t be surprised if Silver is setting up Mike Spano to get rid of him once and for all.
The Republicans also better do something about Zehy Jereis, who has caused enough problems as it is and also is under Federal investigation. Now, he is on record saying he will back the Demorcrat Mike Spano. That’s an unreal posture for a Republican city leader to take. Colety and the others better deal with Jereis come September.

It is really pretty sad to read these blogs. Are you guys men or little boys calling each other names. All you need is the “Nyah, Nyah, Nyah, Nyah” to complete your sentences.
And to have either of you represent a party is disgusting and disheartening to say the least. I think you both should grow up. Have you all lost sight of the issues.Or are the issues irrelevant? Guess I am too naive to understand that.
You obviously don’t even care enough to make a pretense of issues that may or may not be grounded in what the voting public believe, at least giving them the option of voting for whomever pretends to support those positions close to the voter’s moral views.
This blog is particularly juvenile and it makes clear the reasons why so many don’t even bother to vote anymore.

Lou, Senator Stewart-Cousins brought in 344 million in State dollars to the City of Yonkers. Check the info in your tax bill that you just received from the City of Yonkers. Nick is done in the Senate. Plain and simple. The City of Yonkers has two Senators – both Democrat. All but one of the Senators that represent Westchester are Democrats. All of the State representatives from Yonkers are Democrats.
If what you mean to say is that organizations like the Yonkers Chamber of Commerce did not get a member item – OK. That is the same Chamber of Commerce that gave a 100,000 contract to the Yonkers Republican Chairman – Jeris and 50,000 contract to the 1st Vice-Chair – Martinelli out of a 170,000 contract. I forgot to mention that the Chamber of Commerce can find the contract for Jeris, can’t find any minutes that any Board member actually voted on receiving such funds and granting a contract to Jeris nor can they find ant resemblance of documentation to what they paid 100,000 to jeris to accomplish. I’d rather have Stewart-Cousins and Klein representing Yonkers making sure that OUR money is distributed in a way that most of us can understand.
By the way, Westchester NEVER got any of the High Tax Aid even when Nick Spano was the Senator but heck never let good hyperbole get in the way of facts. Check the info, when Bill Ryan was an Assemblyman he was railing about what – the lack of High Tax aid for Westchester.
Just because Long Island Republican Senators stole money creating a formula that would only apply to their districts does not mean that we should. Aid should be distributed by need no greed.

The Speculator may be spinning on some items, but is right on the money, literally, when it comes to Spano, Jereis, Angelo Martinelli and the Yonkers Chamber of Commerce.
Jereis is a very heavy albatross around Nick Spano’s neck, and he also hurts the Republican party county-wide. But Nick and Angelo won’t make Jereis disappear from the scene. And why won’t they? The answer to that one is obvious to everyone, except perhaps to the Consultant, who conveniently loses his analytical abilities whenever the names Spano and Angelo Martinelli are mentioned.
Jereis will be the final undoing of Nick Spano yet, and probably already cost him a bunch of votes last time around. There was a lot of bad publicity about Jereis, extortion, organized crime connections, etc., before the election. That couldn’t have helped Nick last time.
And now, the Jereis problems continue because lately there is the ongoing Federal investigation, of which Jereis clearly is one subject, and also the Chamber of Commerce scam. But Nick (and Angelo Martinelli) do nothing about Jereis. Very curious. Or very obvious.
Speculator Cousins didnt bring the money in its money that is mandated nothing extra-Nick Spano brought in extra aide for Yonkers consistenly-and if he was still in his seat a large portion of the money that went to Nassau would have come to Yonkers-there is a gap in the school budget in Yonkers-4 million would have been 80 million if it wasnt for Nick Spano bringing in 76 million in recurring aide-you are mistaken Nick Spano is not finished-cousins is-her performance in the Senate is dismal to say the least-she hasnt brought back anything for Yonkers hasnt passed one bill hasnt done anything. She said day one everything changes-it sure did we lost our voice in Albany-we lost a leader-we got nothing.
Cousins has shown herself to be a major disappointment. If Spano would rid himself and the County Republican Party of Zehy Jereis and his few cronies, Spano would look OK again. But he has to deal with that big Jereis problem.
Wonder if Spano will make an appearance tonight at Peter Kelly’s place on the river in Yonkers. Mike Bloomberg is hosting a fundraiser there for Amicone. That’s a pretty good endorsement for Amicone, and a strong show of support for him by Bloomberg, who eveeryone knows is now an independent.

Lou, there is an old saying which holds that people are judged by their friends and by the company they keep.
Zehy Jereis is dreadful, and he drags down the Yonkers Republicans and the entire County organization by his presence. Nick Spano needs to divest himself and the Yonkers and County orgs of Zehy Jereis. He should have been bounced two years ago, at least.
If Nick Spano does that, and forces Jereis out, I think he will gain considerably more support than he has now.
The point I continue to make is that the State Legislature is made up of 2 bodies the Assembly – big time controlled by Democrats and the Senate – Republican by 2 seats.
Next year, whoever the Republican candidate turns out to be for President, loses to the Democrat. It’s just the cycle. There will be no coattails for Nick Spano to run, the District is Democratic and like it or not the majority of voters are going to give Andrea Stewart-Cousinis a pass.
They will not compare her at year 1 (Year 2 by that time) to the position of Nick Spano after 26 years. What did Nick Spano deliver the 2nd year he was a Senator.
76 Million in recurring aid is really like 16 million after you deduct the money Yonkers was receiving on a recurring basis from the Desegregation lawsuit.
Again the facts please, there a 4 Democratic Senators that represent Westchester (Oppenheimer, Hassell-Thompson, Klein and Stewart-Cousins) and 1 Republican Senator (Liebell). Why isn’t anyone screaming that the Assembly Democrats did not protect Westchester with the High-Tax Aid? The Assembly does represent 1 leg of the 3 leggged stool.
Nick Spano doesn’t have a chance – but he is doing great at keeping his name in the mix. Even Spanovision admits that Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins is extremely popular.
I wouldn’t be the Speculator if I didn’t speculate. Senator Stewart-Cousins wins going away. Nick Spano doesn’t run, kills the mystique. Spano will decide that some mysterious item (you pick) prevents him from running. Guiliani won’t make a difference, neither will Mother Theresa. How many more votes for Spano will come out than last go around. Not many.
For the record, the Consultant did predict that Spano would prevail while County Legislator Ken Jenkins accurately predicted the Stewart-Cousins victory.

IMO, a winning Republican ticket in ‘08 would be Thompson-Giuliani or Giuliani-Thompson. Newt Gingrich is a wild card at this point. He may or may not get in it. Romney has a fair amount of support, but probably not enough to win the nomination.
If Rudy is on the ticket in either the prez. or VP slots, Nick Spano will win back the Senate seat, if he runs. He might win anyway, if he runs.

Again I like Nick Spano and all that he did for the 35th Senate Dist. and I don’t think anyone did or will work as hard as he did for his constituents no matter what all you Spano Haters say, Andrea is not and never will be a NICK SPANO and we will continue to pay for the lose of Nick and to him I say, go make the big bucks and get paid for your knowledge of 28yrs and screw politics.
Nick will keep his hand in it, one way or another. He’s been a player so long he can’t help himself.
As for Cousins, no argument. She has done little, if anything.
I AGREE THAT NICK IS DOING VERY WELL IN THE PRIVATE SECATOR. BUT…. THAT DOES NOT MAKE HIM TICK.. HE LOVED DOING HIS AND JOB AND EVEN STATED HE WOULD DO IT FOR FREE. I AM SURE HE WILL RUN AND IT IS MY HOPE THAT HE WINS. THE DISTRICT IS SUFFERING UNDER ANDREA DO NOTHING COUSINS.

lou you are obsolutely correct-Nick Spano is a leader something that Cousins will never be-we need him back in the Senate back in his seat, Cousins has done and will do nothing and we are all suffering because of it.
