The cash-starved Westchester GOP

21

If it wasn’t bad enough that Democratic voter enrollment is soaring or that one of their most notable politicians (Assemblyman Mike Spano) just abandoned the party, the news on the financial front is also pretty grim for Westchester Republicans.

According to their the July 15th financial filing, the Westchester Republican Committee has a not-so-impressive cash balance of $613.97. And sadly, this figure is an improvement. The party started the year with a negative balance of $512.57.

The party’s dire financial condition is all but certain to cast a further shadow on the tenure of former Chairwoman RoseMarie Panio, who stepped down last month, and complicate matters for newly-elected Chairman Douglas Colety of New Rochelle.

It also means the Republican candidates running for office in Westchester this year will likely receive little support from the county organization – especially when it comes to raising money.

Time to sell the building. That’s a pretty pathetic number. Besides Panio, how much of this blame can be laid at the feet of Nick Spano, and of his albatross Zehy Jereis?

Even Dennis Robertson and Vincenza Restiano have more cash on hand than the Westchester Republicans do. And Robertson and Restiano have very little.

  2. THIS IS PATHETIC. NOW DO YOU SEE WHY WE NEEDED TO ELECT DOUG COLETY 2 YEARS AGO? PANIO PUT THIS PARTY IN THE SHITTER, ACCEPTED A CAR THAT THE PARTY PAID FOR, A MONTHLY STIPEND, AND HIRED AN OVER-PAID ASSISTANT. MAYBE SHE COULD HAVE BEEN MORE FRUGAL UNDERSTANDING THE SITUATION THE PARTY WAS IN, BUT NO – NOT ROSEMARIE. SHE DANCED AWAY FROM HER RESPONSIBILITY. I KNOW DOUG WILL RE-BUILD THIS PARTY AND WE CAN JUST COUNTY OUR LUCKY STARS THAT HE’S THE CHAIRMAN, NOT PANIO.

THAT’S FUNNY ROSEMARY ALWAYS TOLD ME HOW DETAIL
ORIENTED SHE WAS AT THE HOUSEKEEPING FUNCTION AT
214…SOMEONE NEEDS TO LOOK AT THE PRIOR FILINGS
TO SEE WHERE THE MONEY WENT…IF IT WENT TO CANDIDATES
AND THE PARTY SIMPLY COULDN’T RAISE ENOUGH THAT
IS ONE THING..IF IT WENT TO ALBANY THAN THAT IS QUITE
    ANOTHER..WESTCHESTER MONEY SHOULD BENEFIT WESTCHESTER
    CANDIDATES…..

  4. WOW – THAT MAKES DENNIS ROBERTSONS MONEY LOOK LIKE A WAR CHEST AND THATS BAD. WE HAD A GOOD CHUCKLE ABOUT THE FINANCES OF VINNI AND DENNIS YESTERDAY. THEY SHOULD BOTH THROW IN THE TOWEL. AMICONE WINS BIG HERE. I THINK YOU CAN BLAME ONE PERSON ETHAN AND THAT IS PANIO. SHE WAS THE CHAIRWOMEN NOT NICK SPANO. NICK SPANO HAD NO IDEA HOW MUCH SHE HAD OR WHAT SHE DID WITH IT. I ALSO DON’T THINK DOUG WILL BE ABLE TO GET HIS HANDS ON MONEY EITHER. HE CAN HAVE A FUNRAISER BUT WHO IS GOING TO USE TO DRAW PEOPLE THERE. WE DON’T HAVE ANY WORTH WHILE REPUBLICANS LEFT IN OFFICE EXCEPT JANET AND SHE IS HALF WAY OUT THE DOOR. GOOD LUCK DOUG – YOU ARE THE CHAIRMAN OF NOTHING.

  5. It figures Ethan blames Nick Spano for the financial problems of the Rep. party, I think Nick had more on his mind like trying to hold his seat and raising money on his own then destroying the finances of the Rep. party. When Coulty fails will that be Nick’s fault? I guess if the sky fell today that would be Nick’s fault also, how do you live with yourself and all your nonsense. LOL

Amris, There was a question mark after my comment about Spano. It wasn’t a statement of fact. But since Nick is or was the Major Domo of the Party in Westchester, it’s fair to ask what, if any, role he played in this fiasco. But notice also that the Consultant wondered about money possibly going to Albany. Could be a full audit is called for.

  7. just an observer on

money would go to albany for only one reason…to
solidify the position of republicans serving there
by contributing to the senatorial campaign or the
state committee…but there has been no money
going to albany for many years …that’s because
there is simply no money…republican candidates
have their own fundraising sources..the party
has been unable to draw a paying crowd since
nick was the chair…he was able to raise plenty
from the unions, from developers, from just
plain republicans, once he gave up the chairmanship
there was no ability to raise money and once he lost
there was no reason to contribute

  8. Ethan Edwards on

That’s funny. The Consultant says one thing, the Observer says another, at least in part.

Also, Nick only lost last November. The article says the party started this year minus $512, and actually has more cash now than in January.

    Albany maybe? Very interesting. Maybe.

  9. ETHAN – NICK WAS THE DRAW. NOW THAT HE IS NOT THERE THE GOP WILL BE BROKE. UNLESS HE HELPS OUT WHICH I AM SURE HE WILL. AFTER THE ELECTIONS ARE OVER, MOST PARTY MONEY IS GONE. THEN THE POLITICIANS GET TOGETHER AND RAISE FUNDS FOR THE PARTY AGAIN. DOUG WILL NOT BE ABLE TO THIS WITHOUT NICK. HE SHOULD PUT TOGETHER A FUNRAISER HONORING NICK. THIS WILL DRAW PEOPLE OUT AND MAYBE MAKE THE GOP L;OOK LIKE IT STILL IS THERE

  10. doug is done….if nick stays away from cavalowww and co.he has a chance for a come back!

  11. the consultant on

great idea lou, a fundraiser honoring
nick and promising to take back the seat
    is a great idea

TAKE BACK THE SEAT should be the mantra
also he can do a fundraiser
to stop the democrats from gettng a super majoriity
    on the county board

STOP ONE PARTY RULE IN WESTCHESTER

  12. Ethan Edwards on

Agree that Lou’s idea is a good one for the Republicans.

Of course, Nick Spano would have to commit to running, wouldn’t he? Otherwise, if he won’t do so now, hold it for the Party in general and a few of the top Republican candidates in Westchester, and Spano could be one of the honorees without yet saying for sure that he’s going to run.

  13. WE WERE HAVING A GOOD CONVERSATION. LEADER, ETHAN, CONSULTANT AND WHO JUMPS IN.? PINOCHIO – WOW , THIS GUY NEVER HAS ONE THING TO ADD THAT MAKES ANY TYPE OF SENSE..

  14. Ethan Edwards on

If Colety isn’t still sour about Mike Spano, he should be. And if Mike is as popular as the Consultant claims, he could have been reelected anyway as a Republican. No reason for him to switch on that basis.

As for Nick — I’ve said it before and I’m not the only one who thinks so — if he FINALLY gets rid of Jereis, he would gain even more support. There is no justification of any kind for keeping Jereis around. Everyone knows that, even the Consultant.

Besides all the other strikes against him, Jereis has now said he will support the Democrat Mike Spano. So Jereis is conceding the Assembly seat. Add that to the list of other Jereis offenses, of which there are several serious ones.

  15. the consultant on

You are quite correct about jeries..if you string together
all the problems that have plagued him, and you couple
that with his statement as a republican leader that he
was supporting a democrat (he just should have said nothing)
jeries is an albatross around nick’s neck..I have said
publicly that in the last election which nick lost
by 2200 votes, there had to be at least 1100 pissed of
republicans who but for jeries would have stayed with nick
I truly believe jeries cost nick the election

  16. Maybe the party can borrow some money from Amicone. He has received a fortune in campaign money from developers doing business in Yonkers.

  17. NAH LETS BORROW FROM DENNIS.. OH NO WE CAN’T.. HE DOESN’T HAVE ANY MONEY.. SORRY I FORGOT.. I AGREE WITH BOTH OF YOU GUYS ABOUT Z. I THINK YOU WILL GET YOUR WISH SOON THOUGH…

  18. Ethan Edwards on

Many would say the fact that developers and other businesses are giving Amicone a lot of support shows they have a good amount of confidence in the direction Yonkers is going. That’s a postive sign, not a negative one.

Robertson is basically broke, and Restiano is close to it. People don’t like to put their money into what they clearly believe to be losing causes.

Hope you’re right about Jereis, Lou.
