Spitzer’s mixed poll numbers
A WNBC/Marist Poll out this evening showed that 50 percent of New Yorkers don’t believe Gov. Eliot Spitzer when he said he was not aware of the smear campaign being conducted by members of his staff against Senate Majoroty Leader Joe Bruno.
But the same poll also found that 47 percent of registered voters rate the job Spitzer is doing as excellent or good, up slightly from 43 percent in March. And 66 percent of registered voters think Spitzer is a good leader for the state.
And the poll showed that despite being the well-publicized victim of a smear campaign, Bruno isn’t very popular around the state. Only 26 percent approve of his performance in office.

Let’s be complete with these poll results. According to the JN’s own story today, 60 percent of those polled want the matter investigated further, and 80 percent think Spitzer should testify about his role in it.
As far as the Spitzer approval numbers go, those aren’t surprising in such a blue state. But the results also reveal that even a portion of his own Democrats are not happy with his conduct in the Bruno scandal.
