Rockland DA candidate Zugibe goes email

August
22

Rockland Democrat Thomas Zugibe is trying to reach voters and communicate with them through a campaign letter he’s sending out on the Internet.

He opens his first newsletter with, “Countdown to Election: 77 days…. Tues. November 6” – the day Rockland voters will choose between him and Republican DA Michael Bongiorno, who won election in November 1993. Zugibe has been a prosecutor in Rockland and a West Haverstraw justice.

In this newsletter, Zugibe introduces himself, explains some of his positions and answers questions. He also encourages voters to email him questions about their concerns and community issues. He also writes he’s will speak at any local community gathering. He writes he will provide an answer to questions asked of him on campaign trail in each newsletter.

In this letter, there are political endorsements from Legislature Chairwoman Harriet Cornell, a Democrat, and retired Ramapo Police Officer George Wamsley, a founder of the Ramapo PBA.

  1. Rockland Resident

I happened to receive this newsletter, and I found what Mr. Zugibe had to say to be of help and gave a lot of information I wasn’t aware of that a District Attorney’s office does, etc.

I applaud Thomas Zugibe for having the foresight to reach out to the community and let us know that he is someone we can contact with any questions, or comments, etc. I find that refreshing. His having been a Village Justice and having also been an ADA, shows me he has a lot of experience needed to be a good District Attorney.

I left Manhattan to get a taste of life living in the suburbs. I want to see Rockland remain a safe place to live, and having a District Attorney that will work hard to prosecute all cases, not agree to quick pleas, will discourage those who think they can get away with crime in our community think twice! He also comes across as down to earth and approachable, and that I think would be something a victim or a crime, and their families would appreciate in a stressful situation.

I thought his last name seemed familiar. When I first came to Rockland, there was a Dr. Zugibe who was medical examiner. I’ve come to find that Thomas is his son. I’ve read books by Dr. Zugibe, one of them being about the Shroud of Turine, and such an ethical and detail oriented man such as Dr. Zugibe, I hope, would’ve help raise a son who is a thorough and ethical as he is.

I look forward to the countdown and will lend my vote to someone who obviously cares about what Rockland residents think and values their concerns about public safety.

    Hello readers,

I ran for DA in 2003, and after that served a year in Iraq.
Mr. Bongiorno is an honorable man. Yet in my opinion he has not done enough to fight public corrupton. For this reason, I strongly support Tom Zugibe.

Much governmental wrongdoing does not, however, rise to the level of prosecutable criminal corruption. As a “taxpayer advocate,” I have sought to make a difference with civil legal challenges to governmental wrongdoing. In this regard, let me suggest that if anyone wishes to make a REAL difference in local government, he or she can support my public interest legal advocacy. I have fought, for example, a $400,000+ local police chief annual salary give-away, and fought pension system abuses.
Most recently, my Orangetown taxpayer lawsuit provoked a corrective NYS Comptroller audit regarding an improper gift of retroactive pension by the Town Board members to themselves. Simply outrageous!
I am examining other taxpayer abusives which, though not likely “criminal,” neverhteless involve the waste of large sums of taxpayer dollars.
If anyone wishes to help my public interest actions, please give me a call.
    Sincerely,
    /s/
    Mike Diederich 845-942-0795

PS I also expect to help the public interest further by being elected to the County Legislature, District 1.
