Gun control “lie in” planned for Monday

Posted by: Liz Anderson - Posted in 2007, crime on Aug 24, 2007

The Westchester chapter of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence has announced plans for a “lie-in” at Renaissance Park in White Plains Monday at 1 p.m.

According to an announcement from the group, 32 “concerned citizens” and chapter members will lie down for three minutes, to represent the approximate time it took the shooter at Virginia Tech to purchase a gun. The protest is being organized by Gisela Marin of Tarrytown, whose daughter, Jessica Santos, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Yonkers last year.

here is another issue that conservative republicans
are on the wrong side of…Hunting is a legitimate
reason to own a firearm…there is no legitimate reason
to own a semi automatic firearm unless you intend to
use it agaist another person…The police are unified
in this effort to get automatice weapons and handguns
off the street and so are most americans….

    consultant,
Please do some basic research before you comment.
Why is a semi automatic weapon more dangerous than a double action revolver?
Where in the constitution does it grant the right to hunt?
Why is defending myself not a legitimate reason to own a firearm? Why is a police officers life more valuable than mine? Is it more valuable than your?
Remember, when seconds count the police are only minutes away.

Instead of three minutes they should lie down for one second, the time it would have taken for a single armed citizen to end the rampage at VA tech. So much for “gun free zones”. More like “free fire zones.”

the second amendment was drafted to pertain to militias
not individuals..and that is the basic disagreement
I believe if the drafters were alive today they
would be horrified by the proloferation of illegal
guns period…you want a weapon and you are a law abiding
citizen you can wait until your name and history
are thoroughly researched..In virgina as we unfortunately
saw this psycho just walked in and bought a gun…and
a police officer’s life although not more valuable than yours..is certainly at risk more of the time than you are
and needs all the protection the laws can give him

    Mr Consultant,

A simple look in Webster’s compact dictionary defines Militia as: noun; CITIZEN soldiers. If this is not clear enough a turn to the “c” section reveals that citizen is defined as: noun; any person not affiliated with a governmental or state organization. Someone who is not a policeman, firefighter, public officer, OR soldier. The militia, by it’s very definition (argue with Webster on this one) is comprised of INDIVIDUALS.

  6. the consultant

your definition is contorted andreas..if a militia
if comprised it is made up of more than one…
therefore it is a group and the founders meant
organized groups of men working together to protect
their property..that term is now more applicable
to the state police the county police, the local
    police…etc…any thing that is comprised
of something else has components..and individuals
    do not ..

The gun lobby is afraid of the “slippery slope” idea. That concern is not a wild one. And some of those (not all) who are opposed to gun ownership are way out in left field.

However, personally, I can’t see any reason why Joe Citizen should be able to buy a semi-automatic gun, for example. And there is no question that background checks should be done.

The Virginia Tech massacre is just the most recent example of what can and does happen when “anybody” can just walk in and buy certain types of weapons, no questions asked.

“Slippery slopes” aside, the answer to all this probably is somewhere in the middle of this issue. Both sides have their points.

Why can’t people understand that its not the guns. It is the criminals. Stop the bad guys. Crooks WILL GET GUNS. Bad guys will commit crimes no matter what.
I don’t want the judge and jury to wonder if the guy that they are sentencing will be able to get a gun. I WANT THEM TO HAVE NO DOUBT THAT THE CRIMINAL WILL BE ABLE TO GET A GUN.

I also want that criminal to know that no matter what laws he is willing to break he will not be better armed than I am.

  9. Paul Revere

You bet criminals will get guns. But does that mean every average citizen should be able to arm themselves to the teeth to match them firepower for firepower? The ld “Dodge City” already exists in many innner city neigbhorhoods. That’s enough.

    RE: Police Officers Life Worth….....

Police Officer is the “Blue Line” that separates our citizens from criminals and/or turmoil. In other words shooting a Police Officer is shooting the “Peoples Protector”...last line of defense for the public if you will.

You are shooting the public defender. If there is no heavy hand on protection of Police there is no respect of the law or it’s public will in whole. You got to think about this issue for a while for it to make sense. I can go on and on.

    RE: Gun Owners…........

All the political operatives of the Presidential Campaigns who I speak too CLEARLY…...say that six to ten States swing on the 2nd Amendment issue. No other group (Perhaps Pro-Life? – Supreme Court Change) has done more to advance their cause then this 2A group.

Even in the Liberal Haven of New York State the Albany gang keeps much distance from the power of the 2A groups outside of NYC of course.

When one understands definition of “Semiautomatic” better in terminology, one will understand that the left idea of making “Semi Automatic” wording as a good scare tactic that they use successful until you embarrass them in debate.

    Finally, Good quick question:

Who would you better trust your family with? Legal Firearm Owner or New York State Drivers License Holder?

Legal Firearms Owner…..Is one of the “Safest” people to ever trust your family with.

RE: Federal, State and Local Police Background checked, Fingerprint FBI Clearance, Federal Questionnaire answered under penalty of law of 10 years jail time for falsification, etc…....

New York State Drivers License – Any sicko can easily obtain with no background check.

    Further,

Bill Clinton & Al Gore acknowledged that the 2A group beat Gore in the Bush victory. Also it was the same 2A Groups that made John Kerry walk out of the woods with Gun in hand from a hunting trip for a photo op in the “Gun Belt”

Although, laughing enough I was, Kerry had his partner carry the ducks in hand so as not to upset the left.

hey Jim…I think you are raising a red herring..of course
I would trust a police officer more than I would the
average driver..however that is not the analogy that
is applicable..the issue is the ease with which unqualified
people can obtain firearms that are designed not for
self protection or leisure activity.they are designed
to kill and to kill as many people as possible with
as little effort as possible…You simply cannot let
everyone have access to these weapons without a thorough
and complete backround check and even then the kind of
weapon that a “legal” owner should be allowed to
own should be of the kind and type that is not
    designed for multiple assault kills.

    a barry goldwater republican…

What a joke…where is a run-away bus when you need one!

  14. Jim Kelly - Conservative Campaigns

I do not think you understand the definitions of firearms. Which (repectfully said), most people do not. I myself needed clear definition approx. 10 years ago to underastand the issue.

Assault weapon refers to any military weapon used to aid in military assault operations. NOT ALLOWED TO BE SOLD.

Semi-automatic is the common hunting rifle, which has less then 10 rounds in the clip.

A semi-automatic weapon is one that fires a round with each pull of the trigger, versus an “automatic weapon” which continues to shoot until the trigger is released or the ammunition supply is exhausted.

Semi-automatic rifles are mistakenly believed by many people to be capable of full automatic fire or easily convertible to have that functionality. They are also mistakenly believed to be commonly used by criminals. These perceptions have attracted the attention of gun control advocates, who have introduced and passed legislation restricting the sale, importation, ownership, and manufacture of semi-automatic rifles. In the United States, semi-automatic rifles with a military-style appearance were prohibited from manufacture or importation by the Federal Assault Weapons Ban.

Many semi-automatic-only versions (also known as “sporting” or “civilian” versions) of fully automatic rifles are available, and their external appearance can be nearly identical to their automatic counterparts. However, modern semi-automatic rifles are designed so that they cannot be converted easily to fully automatic fire. In the U.S., BATF regulations require that semi-automatic rifles be manufactured so that they cannot accept parts or modifications that would allow them to be capable of fully automatic fire.
