Giuliani, Romney square off on immigration

Posted by: Brian Tumulty - Posted in 2008, Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani, White House on Sep 05, 2007

Tonight’s Republican presidential candidate forum broadcast on Fox News featured a spirited discussion of illegal immigration by several candidates, including a discussion of New York City as a “sanctuary city.’’

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has used that description of the Big Apple as part of his criticism of former Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

“We should reduce funding to what I call sanctuary cities,’’ Romney said.

Giuliani, in his defense, said that he served as mayor of a city with 400,000 illegal immigrants. His focus was on crime reduction and his 1994 executive order urging illegal immigrants to report crimes to the police, was made in that context.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, asked about his position that some of the controversy over illegal immigration is racist, said his focus would be on sealing the borders. But, he added, if voters want someone as president who has a mean spirit, “I’m not the guy.’’

The good news is that, finally, ALL of them want to clamp down on this problem, and say they are serious about it. The American people sent that message very clearly not long ago, and that is what brought McCain’s candidacy to an end. His support of that failed bill did him in. He’s still running, but he’s on life-support.

I bet if Mitt Romney win the republican primary he will change his view on immigration again.

Hey john, I’ll take that bet. I sure hope he wins so I can collect.

Hey John, I’ll take that bet also. My inlaws have known the Romney Family for over 40 years. My wife used to be his housekeeper and took care of their sons. When ever you are ready to give me an amount, I am ready to take it. I am absolutely certain about this I would be willing to risk my house, automobiles, and my salary for the next year. How about you?
