Tonight’s GOP forum in New Hampshire

September
5

The absence of former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee at tonight’s Republican candidate forum at the University of New Hampshire drew humorous comments from the field in attendance.

“I was scheduled to be on Jay Leno tonight, but I gave up my slot,’’ former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee noted in reference to Thompson’s scheduled appearance later tonight on NBC.

Thompson, who is expected to officially declare his candidacy tomorrow, was urged by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney to wait longer. “Why the hurry?’’ he asked, adding on a serious note than Thompson will be welcomed to the field.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani referred to his former job as a U.S. attorney when he observed that Thompson has “done a pretty good job of playing my part on Law and Order,’’ but he prefers “the real thing.’’
