The response from other Democratic candidates for president to the plan put forward today by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton for universal health care coverage has varied from New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson’s observation that it mirrors much of his plan to former North Carolina Sen. John Edward’s effort to up the ante.
Clinton said she thinks universal coverage could be achieved during her first term as president.
Edwards, however, said he would challenge Congress to enact a plan within six months after he takes office by proposing legislation that would eliminate coverage for lawmakers, the president and the cabinet after July 20, 2009.
Richardson said the plan he announced Aug. 7 in Council Bluffs, Iowa â€â€Å“ like Clinton’s plan â€â€Å“ has an individual mandate to obtain coverage, tax incentives to help individuals pay for coverage, and builds on the federal employee health plan to provide coverage.
“I am pleased that Sen. Clinton finally has joined the debate,” Richardson said in a press statement. “I also am proud to see that she supports most of the initiatives I have outlined in my comprehensive proposal, which is the most effective and responsible way to make sure that every American has the best possible coverage.”
Connecitut Sen. Chris Dodd said the first effort at universal health coverage in 1993-94 was a victim of “mismanagement.’’
“To ensure all Americans have affordable health care will take more than leadership that simply knows how to fight,’’ Dodd stated. “It will take leadership that knows how to bring people together and win.”

We are in the Twilight Zone. It’s 1994 all over again.
OJ Simpson’s been arrested, and Hillary is putting forward her “vision” for socialized medicine on a large and very expensive scale. It’s 1994.
