Yonkers mayoral debate, part two: size of turnout

September
18

Mayor Phil Amicone and his challenger in the Republican primary Vincenza Restiano have disagreed about nearly everything this season so why should their assessment of voter turnout on Primary Day be any different? Voter turnout was light this morning said David Simpson, normally Amicone’s City Hall spokesman, who has been working most recently on the campaign.

Reached early this afternoon, Restiano said the turnout seems normal, light in one place but good in an another. If turnout holds, Simpson said, perhaps only 3,500 of the 23,000 enrolled Republicans, or 15 percent, may make it to the polls. Restiano had a different calculation saying some 8,800 Republican voters generally show up at primaries and that was probably as good an estimate as any. In any case, turnout is likely to be lighter than four years ago, when Amicone, Restiano and Assemblyman Michael Spano tusseled for the Republican nomination for the mayoral post being vacated by John Spencer. About 50 percent voted.

So the question comes down to whether one candidates’ voters are turning out in unusual numbers, a question that won’t be answered until after the polls close. Simpson insisted that three of every four voters polled in recent weeks favored Amicone. Restiano saw things differently: “I got my mesage out. My people are voting.”

actually the two statements are not inconsistant
turnout may have been light this morning and
may have picked up when ms restiano was reached..
out of 23,000 registered republicans 22% should
turn out that would be about 5000 voters
phil amicone will get 3600..restiano will get
    about 1400

And then hopefully it will be bye bye vinnie… time to move outta Yonkers.

Restiano can take Spencer, his present wife, McLaughlin, Jereis, Robertson and Sam Zherka with her. Butte, Montana is a good place for them, or maybe Allenwood, Pa.

  4. the consultant

what on earth do you have against Butte?

  5. Ethan Edwards

You are right. I was playing with the word “Butte.”

But Deer Lodge, Montana would be very appropriate, as
would Allenwood, Pa. One is more “restricted” than
    the other.

  6. Westchester Wisdom

Butte Montana was renamed Poisonville in Dashiel Hammett’s early novel, “Red Harvest.” Apparently back then it was a very corrupt municipality.

  7. used to be republican

GOOD NIGHT VINNI! HOW STUPID… YOU HAD A GOOD JOB COURTESY OF SENATOR SPANO BUT YOU CHOOSE TO MORTGAGE YOUR FUTURE AGAIN AND THROW IT ALL AWAY AND FOR WHAT? NOTHING! YOU EVEN GOT ON T.V. AND BASHED THE HAND THAT FED YOU WHEN NOBODY WOULD HELP YOU AND THAT WAS NICK SPANO. ON TO VICTORY FOR THE MAYOR. 30% PATHETIC!
