Iraq War Memorial in White Plains

Posted by: Susan Elan - Posted in Iraq on Sep 21, 2007

Local peace activists plan an Iraq War Memorial starting Sunday at Memorial United Methodist Church in White Plains.

A week of remembrance and reflection regarding the human consequences of the Iraq War will begin with the planting on the front lawn of the church of about 3,800 small flags bearing the name of each U.S. soldier who has died in the war. A banner and photos will memorialize the more than one million Iraqis estimated to have died since the war began in March 2003.

No War Westchester is a sponsor of the event at the church located at 250 Bryant Avenue in White Plains. The organization plans a 2 p.m. meeting Sunday to highlight the human consequences of the war, which include a large number of American and Iraqi injuries and a growing refugee crisis, with more than 2 million Iraqis having fled the country and 2 million internally displaced.

Pat Clark, the former director of the Nyack-based Fellowship of Reconciliation, will participate in the meeting.
